Why Secure Data Destruction

In the digital age, data security is not limited to storing data. Securely destroying data at the end of its life is just as important as storing it. So why is secure data destruction so critical?

Which Devices Should Be Destroyed?

All storage media containing data require professional destruction:

  • Hard Disk Drives (HDD)
  • Solid State Drives (SSD)
  • Laptops
  • Desktop Computers
  • Servers
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • USB Drives
  • Memory Cards
  • CD/DVD/Blu-ray

Data Protection and Legal Requirements

Personal Data Protection Law (KVKK), requires that when the purpose for processing personal data no longer exists, such data must be deleted, destroyed or anonymised.

Important

Under data protection regulations, data controllers must set the periodic destruction period to no more than 6 months.

Why Is Simple Deletion Not Enough?

Many organisations think that deleting files or formatting the disk is sufficient. However:

  • Deleted files can be easily recovered
  • Formatting does not physically destroy data
  • "Deleted" data can be recovered with special software
  • On SSDs, data remnants occur due to wear-leveling
